Program
Overview and Goals: The East Bay Innovations/Oakland
Adult & Career Education Project SEARCH program is a year-long,
Monday through Friday internship for adults with developmental
disabilities taking place entirely at a host business site
within the community. Total workplace immersion
facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction,
career exploration
and on-the-job training. The goal for each intern is to have
exposure to careers in health or the public
sector environments, to build resumes and
to attain competitive employment at the host business site or
within the community using the skills they have acquired.
Worksite Rotations: Interns build both academic
and vocational skills through “hands-on” work experience in various departments
throughout the host business. These unpaid student internships will
involve complex but routine tasks in assembly, clerical, courier,
sterilization, stocking
and environmental
services. Project Search graduates will have an opportunity to rotate
through three departments throughout their training.
Eligibility and Referral: Applicants should be
18 or older, have exited the k-12 school system, meet eligibility
requirements for Regional Center of the East Bay, pass criminal
background check, meet immunization requirements, be able
to utilize independent transportation options, adhere to the
business site's dress and standards of conduct and benefit from
a support and training ratio of 1:4.
